We Interrupt Your Regularly Scheduled Football Programming for Anthony Davis News

By Annalece Anhalt-Slaughter

Monday morning, anyone with ESPN alerts set woke up to the news that Anthony Davis told the New Orleans Pelicans he was not interested in extending his contract with the team. Say what?

The All-NBA forward has been a beacon of hope for New Orleans, so to state that he wants a trade to another team instead of signing a five-year, $240 million deal, is quite a shock for their fans. Per his agent Rich Paul, “Anthony wants to be traded to a team that allows him a chance to win consistently and compete for a championship.” Ouch, we imagine the people of New Orleans are taking that particular phrasing a little harder ahead of Super Bowl LIII.

Cue the onslaught of Los Angeles Lakers-Anthony Davis memes. Or more specifically, LeBron James memes – shout out to Bleacher Report for this little creation. Lakers fans are clamoring for a trade that sends Lonzo Ball away and brings in Davis, finally giving them their first real shot at an NBA Championship since signing James. The possibility isn’t far off considering Paul also represents James.

So, what would our fans do if it were their player looking for a trade? Would they be quick to say, “see ya later,” or would they try to convince him to stay? We’re guessing they’ll fall somewhere in the middle. Our fans will be drafting the players that make their team – hand-picking them – so they will likely feel a sting of betrayal. But, we don’t think it will last long. After shaking off the initial insult of wanting to be traded, we know our fans will be hard at work, pin-pointing the best option for a trade. They would ensure that if their soon-to-be former player wants to leave, that they will only let it happen if it means getting the best player possible in the trade. We hope our fans brush up on their strategizing before season kicks off!
