Let us start with the simple fact that when we heard about this story, our response was “LOL, okay” with a heavy eye roll. Ohio State University has apparently filed a trademark application for the word, “The.” It’s not as bad as it sounds though, the folks at THE Ohio State University are well aware that you can’t trademark a common word by itself. Per the United States Patent and Trademark Office, an application was submitted to include “The” on apparel for the school, as long as it precedes “Ohio State University,” whether written out or the logo by itself.
We’re sure we aren’t the only ones who get annoyed during NFL player introductions when guys say “THE Ohio State University” – it’s okay, you can admit it bothers you too. But is adding in “The” completely necessary, even if that is the school’s official name? We don’t think the fans will find it necessary. But will they buy any of the proposed gear with “THE” featured prominently? We’re going to go with a ‘no’ on that one as well.
