Let’s Get Ready To Fumble!

By Annalece Montgomery

FAN Take is a series that highlights trending events, issues, and decisions in the world of sports and analyzes how they may or may not factor into the Fan Controlled Football League. We would love to hear your feedback, so let us know what you think about each FAN Take!

Okay, so maybe we shouldn’t get ready to fumble, but we do want to talk about the worst rule in football. Last week in a match against the Denver Broncos, Xavier Grimble of the Pittsburgh Steelers fumbled the ball out of the endzone, resulting in a turnover to the Broncos on their own 20-yard line. Granted, Denver didn’t score on this particular drive, so there wasn’t too much harm done. Unfortunately, the Steelers did end up losing the game 24-17.

So why do we consider this rule the worst? Well, when a player fumbles the ball out of bounds, it doesn’t get turned over. It’s another example of how arbitrary (and inconsistent?) the rules of the NFL tend to be. Last year, the folks at The Ringer offered up a few options as to how the rule could be changed, and unfortunately for Grimble, they didn’t listen.

While we think this rule is especially awful, we want to know fans, which rule drives you nuts? Which one makes your blood boil anytime it gets called by a referee? Do you hate seeing the offense keep the ball at the spot of a fumble? Maybe pass interference, specifically how it manages to exist even when the ball is uncatchable? We want to hear from you, fans, which rule is the absolute worst?

Power To The Fans!
