Alabama Becomes ‘Big Brother’

Looks like Alabama is the first university to take the ‘Big Brother’ idea to the next level. In an effort to keep students at Bryant-Denny Stadium during the entirety of some of their less-competitive games, the school has had students download an app that tracks their location. Before we dive too deep into how creepy that sounds, there is an upside here. Students rack up loyalty points by using the app to cash in on prizes. Example: Alabama students download the app and earn 100 Tide Loyalty Points for attending a home game, then are rewarded an additional 250 for staying until the fourth quarter. The more points a student racks up, the more perks they can get – including tickets for College Football Playoffs.

Aside from the obvious privacy concerns over students having their movements tracked, the points system doesn’t seem to take into account the weather conditions during home football games. During last week’s game against New Mexico State, one of those less-competitive games we mentioned, temperatures hit over 100 degrees. Mitchell Slifka, a junior, said “It’s 100 degrees and, personally, I don’t think it’s safe. I’m not sticking around just to get loyalty points.” We can’t say we blame Slifka in the slightest – anything over 80 degrees and we’re looking for somewhere with air conditioning to retreat to.

While Alabama might be the only school currently tracking their students’ location with the app, they aren’t the only one to encourage students to use it. Other schools like Clemson have their students rack up loyalty points for rewards like branded t-shirts. So what if we deployed something like this with the FCFL app? Would the fans want to earn special perks or FanIQ points for checking in at specific locations to watch a game? Or maybe earn those same perks for watching games with their friends? We think that’s something the fans will jump all over – so long as we aren’t requiring them to spend multiple hours under the hot sun in Tuscaloosa 😏
